here but I forget where they were. I remember one on Van Ness and the one on Geary too.

If you ever came over to Oakland I hope you made to to Kaspers on Telegraph, the one across the street from Bertola's. Harry was quite a character & his hot dogs were great. The place pretty much looked like it does in the b/w photo in the article. so did Harry sr.

I grew up out in the tri-valley, so going in to Oakland or the City was a treat in the 60's. I remember the first time we went to a "real" chinese restaurant in Oakland. Can't remember the name, but my dad had me order chicken foot soup. He laughed his butt off when it came and he saw the look on my face. I ate it though, and it was damn good.

In the 60's the Betterway on Bancroft a bloc or so from the Chevy plant (now Eastmont mall) was a big deal Chinese restaurant here in Oakland. Lots of other ones scarttered around town in those days. still are.

Long run though, 1949 to 1986. Same guy, Al Ross, who lived to be 93 and passed away in 2010.

The Wiener dog head in the op is the last one left, and it sits at Sloat Blvd near 45th. It was made a San Francisco landmark in 2008.

I grew up with The Doggie just over the hill from me on Mission and Persia. There was nothing quite like hitting DD late night after a movie or school game. There is a guy over in Emeryville who owns THREE DD heads and has them on a little trailer -- they show up for many city events like the St. Stupid's Day Parade. It always put s smile on my face when I see them.
