(36 posts)Individuals in our little family have lived in all of the largest Ohio cities on the face of the compass at various stages of life: childhood, adolescence, college, work situations. We've brought the kids along and then sent them on their way only to follow. Although ready for a change of scenery, the places I'd go for that scenery are either politically inconsistent with my values or way beyond my financial resources. Eventually, I hope to settle down as in Heaven is my home. Hopefully, there is teleporting!

(38,264 posts)I grew up in a 99.44% Ivory Soap pure white community that was kept that way by cops whose favorite sport was harassing non-white people, and good white Christian real estate and mortgage lenders and property managers who could somehow never find nice housing for people who were not straight square white.
As a skinny, squeaky, autistic spectrum kid of indeterminate sexuality and non-evangelical pacifist Christianity, my middle and high school experience was Lord of the Flies. My closet friends were prone to suicide, and a few of them succeeded. Mentally I'd abandoned high school when I was fifteen, but it took nearly a year to iron out the details of my non-suicidal departure. This was in the mid-seventies, before the GED, HEP, or other high school equivalency programs. I was accepted to college as a minor. It was conditional. I had to finish out the semester. My last semester in high school was the worst year of my life. It's a fucking miracle I didn't kill myself or go out in the middle of the night to burn the entire place down. Gasoline was cheap, I could pick locks, and I knew how to build radio and timer controlled igniters.
I don't blame my parents, they are artists who usually had day jobs and that's where they'd landed for work. Me and my siblings fled as soon as we could, as did my parents very soon after my dad retired with a good union pension.
As an adult I have chosen not to live in majority white communities, most especially them that regard Ronald Reagan as a some kind of smiling saint.
