The worst gifts boyfriends give to girlfriends, from a can opener to a sonogram

When Jennifer Purdie’s new boyfriend handed her a jewelry box, she felt embarrassed that she’d been outdone. They’d been dating only two months! She had assumed that they’d go small and sweet with their Christmas gifts, so she had baked him cookies. And here he was, giving her jewelry.

Or was he?

Purdie, then in her mid-20s, opened the box to find a slip of paper. It was a sonogram — an image of the inside of another woman’s uterus. Purdie was confused. Maybe this was his way of announcing he was going to be an uncle?

Wrong again. “I’m going to be a daddy!” her boyfriend said. No, he hadn’t cheated on Purdie — he’d just (accidentally) gotten his ex-girlfriend pregnant before they broke up, and this was his way of sharing the news.

“He thought he was being clever, and he was just being stupid,” Purdie said.

1. My worst gift ever:

One year, I got a fake designer purse. Really. I was so appalled that anyone would give me such a thing that all I could say was, "Wow. Thanks." How about you?

7. I got a real designer purse once

Etienne (sp?) popular in the 80s. Way too small and no zippered compartments. Never used it.
My son-in-law got my daughter a $400 Coach purse when they were dating. Talk about a waste of $$ IMO. I’m happy with the $30 purse I got at Target that has all the zippers and compartments I need.

2. A footbath

The kind you give your grandmother from my husband whom I had married just before Thanksgiving. Not surprisingly, that wasn't the only stupid thing he did and we divorced a couple of years later.

5. When I was a kid

Think I was 8, my grandparents got a a really nice kid-sized rolltop desk. It’s still in the family. I was really disappointed, where was the toy??
One year my brother gave me a brown padded toilet seat. I *think* he meant it to be funny but it matched our bathroom at the time so maybe not. We used it.

6. An extra-large sweatshirt

I was a petite size 4 or 6. It was useless.
I later found out that he knew someone who was volunteering with the Seattle Opera, and bought the sweatshirt with a Seatte Opera from her. Apparently he was more concerned with pleasing her than with pleasing me.

To be honest, I stayed with him after that. That said something about me. About a year later I broke up with him. That also said something about me - I finally learned.
