In northern Virginia.

Nothing unusual, I suppose, but I can't place it.

I'll hit Google images. Something will turn up.

ETA: Winter Birds of Arlington

It's got a speckled back, sort of like that Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, but I see it looking for food in the soil, not on a tree trunk.

It's the size of a robin. We get robins all winter long.

identify and finally figured out with the help of Peterson's that they were juvenile red-wing blackbirds!

This year, we have seen juncos at our feeders (in N. GA) for the first time in years. When I lived in the mountains of western NC, we had juncos year round. They used to visit my parents' feeders, but at some point they stopped coming. Ditto the pine siskins.

copy of what I lovingly call "Sibley's" and I am on the Hoary Redpoll bandwagon 89%. It looks like the adult female but this one could be in the process of becoming an adult.
Some of the features indicate Common Redpoll like the beak length and some of the stripe locations yet the length of the wings is as much a factor where the wings are shorter than the Hoary variety but the Common has a darkish mask around the eyes where the Hoary does not and neither does the bird in the sample photos...

I think I would call it an adult female Hoary Redpoll.

Those photos are good ones for Identification.

That's a wonderful photo. Do you have a camera mounted on the feeding station, or, are you shooting telephoto?
