I went to the 'City of Rocks' state park in N.M. yesterday.

I've been through New Mexico many times but somehow managed to
miss this cool place. Rock formations made from 40 million year old
volcanic ash, eroded into massive boulders. The eruption is said to have
been 1000 times stronger than Mt. St. Helens and lasted for years.

of the way place....A very long time ago, my family went on a trip to California from our home in Chicago...So, I had read a great article on Carlsbad Caverns National Park. (1960) I tried to convince them to go there. Nope, it was too much out of the way on the trip to LA and San Diego....................
.19 years later, 1970 in the summer, I went there. It is truly the most amazing cave with incredible formations. More than that, there are some amazing views inside, you look 250 feet straight up..and can not see the top of the cave at one spot, then at the exact same spot, there is a large canyon..250 straight down.. and you cannot see the bottom. It is unlike any place that I have ever been in. Yes, you can walk down, to 750 feet below the surface, or take an elevator..Like the City of Rocks State Park, it is an amazing place to visit,...but if you look on a map, it is somewhat out of the way...
.....By the way, even though Carlsbad Caverns is out of the way, it is worth going out of the way to see it. And if I can I will get to City of the Rocks State Park..even if it is .."out of the way."

We met in Las Cruces--they were coming from Dallas. They wanted to
visit Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands, but both were shut down the
night they left--National Parks are shuttered. They were very disappointed.
But they voted for the pResident....
So we looked for other places to see.
From the City of Rocks on to Silver City, a place I'm tempted to move to.

I hope you enjoyed your trip there, and I love these little mini-explorations of out-of-the-way places where I've never been.
