It is one of the loudest creatures on earth when measured as a group. They take over our koi pond each spring and the sound is unreal.

it's so bad it can be funny - especially with the right chemical enhancement.

But I have only ever watched it once - that was more than enough.

Way back, before satellite TV companies gave away their installation, we had a DirecTV dish installed - It was just outside our back door to make it easier for the installer to run the wires.

A few weeks after we got it, it suddenly stopped working one cool night. I called in and the tech went through all the troubleshooting steps with me. Finally he asked me to check the dish outside. I opened the door and a small anole lizard jumped on my head, startling me so I cried out. The tech was worried and asked what had happened so I told him. Then I shone my flashlight onto the dish - there was a frog sitting on the nice warm LNB (low noise blockdown converter) where the dish concentrates the signal.

I totally lost it laughing about the frog. By then the tech was really concerned - first his customer had been attacked by a lizard (he didn't know how small anoles are) and then I was hysterical, laughing so hard I couldn't explain what was going on. When I could explain, he was freaked and wanted to know what kind of jungle I lived in.

Once we both calmed down, I got a broom and brushed the frog off the dish and had a nice strong signal again. Up until I stopped using satellite for my TV that is always the first thing I check before calling tech support - make sure no critters are taking advantage of the warmth of the parts of the dish.

That is a delightful picture.

I like frogs, and toads, too. This fall, when I woud go walking after dark in my neighborhood, I woould frequently come across little toads. I'd stop and gently scratch their heads with my index finger. They seemed to like it, because they never ran away. Or should that be hopped away?

… teaching what groups of animals are called is a fun part of language! This should be an Abbott & Costello routine, too...

ABBOTT: "... and a group of frogs is called a knot."
COSTELLO: "It's not!"
ABBOTT: "No, it's knot!"

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me
Let me tell you now

When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof (up on the roof)

At night the stars put on a show for free
And, darling, you can share it all with me

I keep a-tellin' you

Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)
