Who else has acute hearing in the minutes before wakefulness?

I confirmed it months ago when I could hear the sound of birds a distance outside of the house. I practiced putting myself in out of semi-sleep and it was consistent. Beautiful harmony in the almost sleep state. And nothing when I was awake.

Then, this morning I thought I was being haunted by a damn mosquito that kept buzzing around my head. It turned out to be a low hum from an electrical alarm near my bed. Could not hear the hum when I was awake. But, damn, it was annoying in that state of semi-sleep.

before we were allowed to go into the room we were warned to be careful what we said because the hearing is the last to go.

it may even be someone talking. But something is making very realistic sounds.

I've concluded that it has something to do with that state of consciousness between sleep and waking. It's some sort of very realistic dream that may or may not be triggered by a real sound.

Rarely, it's a visual. I still remember once when I was very young I "woke up" and saw a very scary spider running around my bed. Tore the bed apart and found no bugs, so it must have been a dream.

(I hoped)

I think what's going on is habituation. When you're just waking up your brain hasn't fully connected so you're not tuning out noise that you have learned to ignore over time. Also, I only have clear hearing in the one ear. The other one can hear very clearly, but only at a different range.

Sometimes I'll hear a noise, loud and clear, before I wake up. Sort of a sudden, loud (?) sound and I figure I dreamt it but I don't really know. I look at the cats, and they're undisturbed.

"sigh" It's probably just getting older

It's like my dream has a theme song or something. It's pretty weird.

Dreams are weird.
