Campbell was a still primarily a studio guitarist at the time and originally recorded it only as a demo. The producer thought it sounded terrific anyway, so he took out Campbell's instructions to the other musicians and just released it as is. The rest, as they say, is history.

I did not realize this till after he died and I saw some videos on YouTube.
