Student Dies 10 Hours After Eating 5-Day-Old Spaghetti

In a case that has been highlighted by Dr Bernard on YouTube, a student with poor knowledge of hygiene ended up dying in his sleep after eating 5-day-old pasta.

Unnamed in case reports, the 20-year-old student used to prepare his meals for the week on a Sunday in an attempt to save time and money. He would boil pasta and then put it into Tupperware containers to be eaten during the week after adding a sauce and reheating it, according to Dr Bernard.

The student, from Belgium, reheated spaghetti that had been prepared five days prior and left in the kitchen at room temperature, according to a case study in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. He attributed the odd taste to the new tomato sauce he put on his spaghetti, ate it all and headed out to play sports.

Within 30 minutes of eating the pasta, he was experiencing intense abdominal pain, nausea, and a headache. After returning home, he immediately had intense episodes of watery diarrhea and vomited profusely, but did not seek medical attention and instead chose to stay in his house, drink water, and try to sleep it off.

The next morning his parents were worried when he didn't get out of bed for college. When they went in to check on him at 11am, he was already dead.

curious how long he had this habit of storing cooked food at room temp. I'd avoid 5 day spaghetti stored in the fridge.

can't be sure your kids understand that, unless you teach them...

At least all I ever ate as a starving college student without a refrigerator was instant ramen or peanut butter sandwiches. Much safer....

My daughter, who is an adult and should know better, ate some oatmeal that she had left in her car overnight in the summer. Fortunately, her stomach rebelled almost instantly, so whatever bacteria was flourishing in there didn’t get a chance to get into her system. I can’t imagine what that family is going through.

If I remember correctly, I think what happened was...

He was strapped for cash so he prepared a week's worth of cheap pasta meals, put them in separate containers, and refrigerated each container. Somehow, one container got left on the table for a period of time, his roommate saw it, and then put it in the fridge.

When it was pulled out of the fridge to eat, I think the guy just assumed it had been in there, instead of realizing that in fact it had sat on the table for a long time.

Sad story all around.

Then the Pepto Bismol he took aggravated the liver damage he had started in motion. The poor, inexperienced guy didn't have a chance.
