When I was in high school we moved to a new place with our tribe of cats. Freddie was a 24# gray tabby with not a trace of fat on him. He would not just go out and have his way with lady cats, he would bring them home and add them to his harem. We had a lot of cats, what with Freddie, his harem, and various litters of kittens. This was a long time ago - today we would spay and neuter.

Anyway, the neighbor came over to warn us that we should keep out cats inside, since there was a dog in the neighborhood that killed cats. Dad said he wasn't worried, that Freddie would take care of his family.

So I'm out in the front one afternoon working on my 1942 Hudson Hornet... (I told you, this was a long time ago.) I hear a ruckus and turn to see a fairly large dog chasing Freddie. Strange. I've never see Freddie run from a dog before. Usually dogs run from Freddie. This is a pretty big dog and looks pretty mean, but still... Odd.

Freddie runs up a tree and stops about eight feet up. The dog is at the base of the tree, barking like crazy and seems to think the situation is in hand now that he has the cat treed. Wrong. Freddie pounces, lands on the dog's back and is reaching around to rake the dog's throat with the claws of both front feet. Freddie was still on the dog's back when it disappeared from sight, but came strolling home a few minutes later, jumped up on the porch railing and calmly started washing his face. Never saw that dog again.
