But I still have standards!

It has to be dark, rich, and tasty enough to stand up to all the sugar and whole milk (and a spoon or two of vanilla-cocoa powder-cinnamon sugar) I put in there.

In fact a friend once commented I like a little bit of coffee with my sweet milk.

Right now I am on a low card diet so I've taken up drinking hot tea with a couple of packs of Splenda. Since tea is such a different experience, it is keeping me satisfied.

Coffer Bean variety wither it is a A B or C grade of bean. Then what varieties are used in blends. Next is Roasting Equipment and technique used in Roasting. Ambient air temp as well as humidity where the roasting process is taking place. Oh,another is elevation, much like baking, altitude does make a difference.

Commercial Coffees are Engineered to produce the maximum flavor in any potable water .

If it's something custom roasted from arabica beans, then it's probably OK, if it's mass produced robusta swill, then it probably sucks.

We went through a bunch of brands through the years and settled on Kroger French Roast beans. They are really good and reasonably priced. Far better for our taste than other more expensive beans. Started out grinding in the store until they took all grinders out of their stores.

Had a great Bunn grinder 'till we wore it out and have been using just a spin grinder that's OK, but we get more bitter from fines than with a burr mill. Even with a cheap grinder, results are much better than Folgers or Maxwell House.

I have an OXO grinder coming and can't wait to try 'er out (grandpa doesn't get Christmas until after everyone else).

Some brands taste better than others, especially depending on the darkness of the roast. But, for me, the biggest factor is whether or not the stuff makes me queasy. Some or 'em do that, like Gevalia and Seattle's Best.
