I guess I'm starting to get old

I went to the eye doctor last week to see about getting some reading glasses. After going through a few tests it turned out that I needed bifocals, "Wow, that's a lot sharper! Who knew?" I'm 39. He said that the "cutoff" for bifocals was usually 40 years old, but that I could use them. So I have them now.

I've never had glasses before, but I thought that if I was going to be wearing them all the time I'd get some nice ones. So, $267 later, here I am viewing you guys with 20/20 vision. Smile!

1. I am 41, and I don't want to think that I am getting old.
2. I have had "multi-focals" since I was 33.

So...you are YOUNG, damnit!

I will agree to agree with you.

BTW, did you used to go by a different user name here? I got that idea from one of your other posts tonight. I've been here since 2003 and used to go by Droopy.

6. We are doing well

Jen recently had her gall bladder removed, but she is recovering well and is out with the girls tonight. So here I am with beer, the dog and you guys.

We are considering trying to make a baby, but she is at higher than average risk because of her age. She went to the womanly doctor last week and was told that she'll have to make a few changes if she wants to do this. The choice is ultimately hers, but I'm on-board if she decides to give it a go. The thought has crossed my mind that I'll be nearing retirement age when the kid graduates high school, but it's not making me too afraid.

on 2 related points: I got my FIRST glasses not long after my first daughter was born, which occurred 10 days before my 40th birthday. Realized I needed SOMETHING when I looked at her face when she was nursing, and I couldn't quite focus! (2d daughter born 3 years later. Everything went well.)

5. I had also posted a thread about getting old - turning 40 this year

Yes, to some we are whippersnappers, but there is something about turning 40 that seems to smack you around. My husband is 40 and was told he will need bifocals next year. This depressed him - he is nearly bald and was going gray in his 30's so that part of aging he got used to - but bifocals!!! lol

Glad you have new specs and can see us better!

Now if I could just get this pain in my back to go away and get my left knee working properly, I'll be good to go.

and be sure to read it in ten years. You'll laugh at the idea you thought you were getting old at 39.

My prescription has changed. They still "work", but I have different glasses for distance driving, around town, the computer, and none for reading up close (which I can still do quite well without magnification). It's a weird dance, but I'm used to it.

16. I got my first reading glasses at 42...very depressing

Especially since I had never neede specs B4. When I was young I had 20/15 vision, so it was a huge adjustment.

I think staring at screens--and in my case, green screens from the 80s--is a big factor to needing lenses at a young age. I'm now 57 (ie, jurassic) and wear mono vision contacts. Who knows, in 20 years when you catch up to me, they may have the LASIK for presbyopia that gives us all back our 19 year old vision. Here's hoping!

Also, glad U and Jen are doing well! We all love your story on DU, it gives us hope for the good things trumping the suckage in life!

17. I started wearing coke-bottle glasses when I was 15.

One of the happiest days of my early life was when I traded them for coke-bottle contact lenses when I was about 22.

About ten years ago, I ordered a pair of glasses again. Advances in lens-grinding technology meant I could have very slim lenses that I had set into a nice pair of Gucci frames. Now I'm stylin'!...
