We used to operate diesel boats quite a bit south of Bermuda to northern Cuba in the 60s. The Navy P-3 Orion sub chasers could easily see us below the surface in the light blue waters, and they would drop test depth charges (TDCs) that went off like a grenade to let us know we were caught, so we can surface now. I was one of the poor bastards that had to change out the running lights because the light bulb filaments broke from the TDC blast. Not easy on a rusty 23 year old pig boat with water leak integrity issues.

When we were in darker waters north of Newfoundland and Labrador, the sub chasers could not see us, but the sonar buoys they dropped nearby would smoke us out.

Cool flick. Thanks.
