The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhen I was young, maybe 16, I was a busboy at Paradise Park in Manoa Valley, Oahu.
I just looked it up and it's not open anymore. The place catered to tourists, who arrived by the busload around noon. Jock Mahoney was the big boss. He starred as Tarzan and many other
roles back when. In the morning, before the tourists arrived, Jock would visit the cages
below the restaurant and do the Tarzan yell. The tourists had matching aloha shirts and muumuus. And cameras.
My boss was Mrs. Yu. She was a smart and savvy manager. My friend and I would
set all the tables while the Asian waitresses folded the napkins like origami cranes.
The restaurant was on the edge of a valley, jungle vegetation. The thirty or forty feet
underneath was a giant bird cage. After eating their choice of mahi-mahi or
teriyake , the tourists would walk down the ramps through the cage and exit below, hoping to meet Jock Mahoney, who was drunk.
The Filipino dishwasher would take home all of the food not eaten.
Mrs. Yu would invite me and my buddy into her office after the crowd had left and
pull a bottle of whiskey out of her desk. "You work hard, now you drink hard."

The plumeria trees in our front yard. I went to Punahou School,
class of '68. My mom taught there or they could never afforded the
tuition.
