Questions about mobile data

My cellphone is my internet, as well as my phone. My carrier is a subunit of T Mobile. What does mobile data do? Do I need to keep mobile data turned on?
Is there a benefit or a loss to me, to keeping it on?

I only turn my Data on when I have no choice, ie. a text message comes in as MMS and I have to turn it on to download it, but afterwards I immediately turn it off. I have Wifi at home, as well as "open wifi " with the digital cable provider in my city, which covers most of the places I go. My advice is to use wifi whenever you can, but never for online banking or purchasing (DO use your Data, or home Wifi, for that!).

Mobile data on a cell phone plan allows the user to access the Internet like web browsing, mobile banking, etc.

You do not need to keep mobile data on. Mobile data is not essential to make phone calls on a cell phone. If your carrier charges you for mobile data, whether you use it or not - there is probably no benefit to turning mobile data off.
