(17,984 posts)My dog finds nasty, stinky things to roll in. Could be poop. Could be dead whatever. It's her perfume!

(17,255 posts)We had our last female shepherd/husky cross down to the river for swims many summers. Sometimes she would find fish guts and roll in them. Talk about a stench, even after swimming in the river (as if wet dog wasn't enough)!

(17,984 posts)She did what she could at the time, but it took a couple weeks till the smell was gone. Then, a month after the incident, he got caught out in the rain and the skunk smell was revived! Whew! It smelled so strong you'd have sworn he had been sprayed that day.

(16,373 posts)Skunk spray lasts months. One of my rescues stank for close to a year on humid days. It seems to ooze out their very pores even after you've scrubbed and scrubbed the doggo. It simply has to wear off.

(17,984 posts)Like when you are driving and smell it. I know that's weird, but the point I want to make is that the smell is completely different when it's close and fresh. Of course it's more powerful, but there is another aspect to it that I can't put my finger on. There is another dimension to the the aroma. People who only know the smell from a distance do not understand just how bad it is up close.
You don't know just how many gallons of tomato juice poor old Bucky bathed in to no effect.

(17,255 posts)None of our dogs has ever tangled with one, or with a porcupine. I hope to keep it that way! But I've heard horror stories from others.
