(13,870 posts)When I was there it was brown bread and their fantastic butter every morning. Then "porridge".
For lunch or for afternoon tea I'd have brown bread, butter and fresh smoked salmon..
Wonderful stuff. My Irish host would make soda bread on occasion but her brown bread was to die for....

(21,774 posts). . .for Irish brown bread (Irish wholemeal soda bread), which I now make quite a bit of (I'm not Irish, BTW). I prefer to make that kind instead of the sweet raisin variety most often see in stores.
Since Odlum's brand wholemeal flour is really not available here in the US, the recipe calls for a mix of whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, wheat bran and wheat germ in its place.
You add baking powder, baking soda, salt and buittermilk and mix together, shape into a loaf, score the top twice with a serrated knife, then bake in a cast-iron skillet. Kinda like how the Irish in the old country would do it, over a turf fire, no doubt.
So easy to make and yet so tasty. And of course, a smear of Irish butter on a slice.
