There's an earlier thread about giving coins to a cashier and getting change back.

Today I was at the store and a lady was finishing up in front of me. She had her purse on the counter and was digging through looking for coins. She was taking her time and the cashier shot me a look. I tried to convey back that I was in no hurry. The lady finally finds whatever she was looking for and gives it to the cashier who returns some coins to her. The lady continues to dig through her purse.
The cashier is getting impatient. I'm just amused thinking about the earlier post from here. Then the cashier says to me "I can help you now, ma'am."
Purse lady still has not moved so I sorta shrug. Then purse lady says "Did you give me my change?"
Yes.
What did you give me?
I gave you 4 pennies and a nickel.
You gave me 4 pennies?
Yes, you gave me a quarter and I gave you 4 pennies and a nickel. The total was $6.16.
Can you give me a nickel?
I gave you a nickel.
No, if I give you 5 pennies, can you give me a nickel?
Yes, I can give you a nickel but I can't open the drawer yet.
Can you give me a nickel for 5 pennies? She keeps digging in her purse.
Another cashier pipes up WHAT does she want?
She wants a nickel for 5 pennies when I get the drawer open. (She rings up my purchase but I pay with a debit card.) Drawer can't be opened.
Purse lady is still standing at the counter so I am a foot from her trying to get my stuff. I dig through MY purse looking for a nickel to give to her, figuring out by now there is something strange going on and I may as well help out. I don't have any change though so I take my stuff, give the cashier a knowing smile and leave.
And purse lady was NOT old at all. Just determined.

(34,133 posts)That is https://notalwaysright.com/ as in "The customer is 'NOT' always right." It is user submitted stories about times customer are not right. They've added sections for not always working, romantic, related, learning, friendly, hopeless, healthy, and legal.
I have fun reading the stories and it teaches me ways to be nice to the servers, cashiers, and others who make our lives easier.

(1,622 posts)...if the purse lady had first handed the cashier exact change and then said "Wait, give me back the 16 cents, here's a quarter."
In my experience, if the cashier was 25 or under, chances are he or she would have been totally confused about how to proceed...

(9,161 posts)She ALWAYS pays the exact change so that she get no coins back. If it's $15.27, she may pay with a Twenty , but she'll dig for the 27 cents and get a five dollar bill in change. I can't figure how how she HAS exact change, since she never gets any back, but her purse sometimes has $10-$15 of coins in it. Is it like Tupperware? Do they breed in there?

It's amazing how fast the random junk piles up.

(17,984 posts)Because I have. Seriously, change is, for some people, disposable. That concept blows me away. I'm the kind of person who bends down to pick up a penny and is happy for the rest of the day.

(46,311 posts)I have a bank I use for my change.
I take it to a local "Coinstar" (yes, I know they charge, but big deal,) when it's about half-full and getting heavy.
Usually takes a few months to get that full.
