But he liked them.

"Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" and "stayin alive" were his biggies, I think.

Of course, my taste in music is questionable, I've been told.

Ha

But I loved his 60s records and 80's stuff.

Actually, I think the tail end of the 70's were the beginning of New Wave and punk, right?

Not all bad I guess.

Anyways, I'm a 90's chick, music wise, to a large degree.

And I remembered the fun music. Fast forward to a few years ago. We took our two daughters (young adults at the time) to see it in Boston. I had forgotten the naked part at the end of the first act. And the sexuality in the lyrics. I was a little bit embarrassed. But only a little.

Fortunately, we had tickets waaaaay up in the balcony.

I liked that song because its repetitiveness matched that of the desert. We spent time in the desert when I was a kid and the memories were happy. The song just seemed to fit. I'm surprised at myself because I usually have much less tolerance of repetition in other songs than do most people.

Kind of a dumb song but I was only 9 when it came out if 1973 (?) so I thought it was the ballad of the century back then....but I loved it. On the other hand Billy Don’t Be A Hero and Lonely Boy made me want to heave and still do when I hear them on the 70’s channel.

On our 8-track tape players driving around. The record was so good we would just play it on the endless loop. A lot of kids today that grew up listening to their parents music don't know who the Guess Who were. I remember this was the first song I heard in 1973, the DJ played it right at midnight on New years and he said, "this is a new song. I don't think it's going to be a very big hit".

It ended up being the number 2 song of 1973.

When I first heard it as a twelve-year-old I loved the song. By about March I totally loathed the song , and they were still playing it heavily in June and July.

It's probably the one song I hate the most from that era LOL

I have to admit, of all the non-singer celebrities and actors who have tried to sing (and there have been a lot of them, usually with either an "one-off" hit or a litany of "worst- of- all- time" reputation), Harris was really not that bad. That is, if he wasn't burning up the charts with other hit songs by his buddy, and fellow Wrecking Crew member, Jimmy Webb at the time.

And just so you know, the lyrics were anything but ridiculous to Webb; it was a song about a love affair that went south. Sappy, maybe, but not ridiculous to 22 year old Webb:

Everything in the song was visible. There's nothing in it that's fabricated. The old men playing checkers by the trees, the cake that was left out in the rain, all of the things that are talked about in the song are things I actually saw. And so it's a kind of musical collage of this whole love affair that kind of went down in MacArthur Park. ... Back then, I was kind of like an emotional machine, like whatever was going on inside me would bubble out of the piano and onto paper - Jimmy Webb

From the Wiki:

Adding together the two 27-week chart runs for the 1975 original single and the 1993 remix version (for a combined total of 54 weeks, two more weeks than a full year) gave the song the longest tenure ever on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart up to that time. The tenure has never been surpassed.

Impossible to not smile and sing along with this one! This is a later remix but it's done very cool and unobtrusively, unlike some re-mixes.

Not the only cannabalism song from the era iirc.

Not sure how this one was missed but this is a classic stupid/great 70s song. Even after all these years, it brings back memories of a very specific time in my life whenever I hear it -
