The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo I'm at Target the other day & they're offering samples of protien drink named.....
Soylent.
Seriously is this a generational thing? Is who ever named this too young to remember the movie? There was a man about my age also trying it and he said to me "You know what Soylent Green is?" - Then we both laughed and the poor little sample person looked perplexed.
And just so you know I'm not kidding here's a couple links to the product

(28,057 posts)but you know we'd never hear the truth about it.
It is not a name I'd pick for a product.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,280 posts)and give it a fancy French name, and call it something like glace à la viande humaine.

That was a scene from some movie or tv show many years ago.

(14,487 posts)I remember seeing an interview with the founder when it first came out. He named it Soylent to generate buzz about it.
He thought real food was a hassle, so he wanted to make something that had all the nutrients, calories, etc that were needed to live on. All I could think of was it was really sad that he must not enjoy good food, since I find it to be one of the great pleasures in life.

Pork, the Aztecs claimed, tasted exactly like human flesh.

The original version was a powder that apparently caused major gastric storms.

(32,356 posts)What a terrible name. Maybe the product itself is good, who knows?
But people are going to avoid it just because of the name.
Maybe you were being market-tested and you didn't know it?
