I have seen it happen a few times fishing where a Northern Pike will strike at a bluegill or perch that I'm reeling in. My Dad actually landed a Pike this way.

One time I was fishing for striped bass in Long Island sound. I was standing on top of a breachway that was maybe 12' above the surface, so I had a clear view of what was happening in the water. I hooked a striper and was hauling him in when a big, dark shadow began approaching. I knew that shadow was a bluefish after my striper, so I just stopped playing my catch and wrenched him out of the water. Crisis averted and the striper got to live another day (or maybe just a few minutes if that bluefish was still hanging around).
