Man shot inside Publix, gun fired from wife's purse after it fell off counter

LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — Criminal charges are not expected to be filed after a man was accidentally shot at a grocery store Sunday, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said the man’s 67-year-old wife was standing at a cash register, checking out. Her purse fell on the counter to the ground and it appears the gun fired when the purse fell to the ground. A bullet hit the man’s lower right shin.

A bullet hole was found in the side of the woman’s purse. She is a concealed carry permit holder and carries a handgun in her purse, according to the sheriff’s office.

Retire, move to Florida, drive slow in the left lane, shoot guns in Publix....ain't life grand!

4. Yes, it actually is common, because a basic safety rule is violated.

NEVER leave a round in the chamber. Always clear the chamber when the firearm is not in immediate use, that is being readied for immediate discharge. It really doesn't matter what the manufacturer claims about "safeties" to preclude this sort of accident. Some manufacturers even claim their gun has a built in "drop safety."

I question the judgement of persons carrying a weapon, because there is also a weapons retention problem. Why do they think they need a firearm in the shopping center because they are going to get mugged? By carrying a firearm they are increasing the danger to themselves and the general public. Let's say someone wants to steal your bag or purse, by carrying a firearm that strong arm robbery attempt is automatically turned into a life or death situation.

Your second paragraph articulates the peculiarity of carrying a weapon. If I have a gun, it's presence could escalate a situation to a life-or-death moment.

Who needs that crap!?

The slightest negligence or oversight can cause tragic results. I have a friend who is retired military. He had a stroke recently and fortunately recovered. He shared this anecdote. He was in a public place when he had the stroke and lost consciousness.

The ambulance came to get him, when they lifted him onto the stetcher, his loaded 45 fell off the gurney onto to the ground. Surprise! The story was so embarrassing, I was sorry he shared it with me. I didn't have the heart to explore it further. Did you have a round in the chamber with the hammer back? I didn't even want to know because I thought I knew what the answer would be. The medical people told him what had happened when he came to, whenever that was.

Decades ago, when I was in an indoor shooting range I used to think who shot all the holes in the stalls, the walls and ceilings, WTF?

You can read about one example at this link.

Civilian versions of the Sig 320 fail the so-called "drop test," but the military version appears unaffected.

I was at the grocery store one Sunday afternoon, and this asshole was parading around so everyone could see he was packing. Never took the thing out of the holster. I saw him several times, and never saw groceries. He was just there to intimidate people. We called the store when we got home, and were basically told "tough crap," it was legal.

I loved, loved, loved my slingshot to pieces. I felt like such a big boy carrying it around with me everywhere I went. I named it "Doris".
