This September Ken Burns has a new PBS mini-series, "Country Music."
Looks like it'll be great!

(115,661 posts)I hate country music. To me it's auditory teargas.

(46,314 posts)There are some tunes and singers I do enjoy, a lot.
I can't stand that "crying country," but I love groups like the Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Statler Brothers, Buck Owens and Roy Clark, Willie and Waylon, just so many.

(8,747 posts)About the Dixie Chicks?
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,661 posts)I am aware that the Dixie Chicks got in trouble for dissing Bush, and kudos to them, but that doesn't mean I have to like their music. I prefer classical music and I think country music is pretty awful.
MicaelS
(8,747 posts)I love Classical music too. But I REALLY do not like most Jazz.
we can do it

(60,013 posts)my least favorite music genre by a mile.
UniteFightBack
(8,231 posts)sake! I like something from almost every music genre. Why close yourself off like that? I saw a documentary a long time ago about early country music and it was very interesting and ya know what I heard a lot of songs I liked!
My favorite music is classic rock and old hip hop and disco but I would be very interested in seeing this.

(46,314 posts)One of the highlighted artists in the preview last night was Willie Nelson.
I confess to not liking what I call "crying country."
(And I'm kind of iffy on trucking songs too.)
Van Halen did a couple songs alongside Hank Williams Jr.
Exile, the group that did the 70's hit "Kiss You All Over" went over to country with "She's a Miracle."

(8,747 posts)Is sheer politics.
If Conservatives like it must be automatically terrible. Just like NASCAR.
Plenty of love though when the Dixie Chicks told off Bush.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,661 posts)came out in rabid opposition to Trump, would you run out and buy season tickets to the Met if you never liked opera before? Sometimes it's just a matter of personal taste and nothing to do with politics.

Charley Pride?
Merle Haggard?

(36,412 posts)Country music, indeed, has been usurped by the right it the last few decades, but there is a ton of old time Country music out there that is really outstanding.
If Hank Williams had half a chance, he'd come back and kick his asshole son into another world.

(8,747 posts)Does that automatically make me a Fascist?
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,661 posts)It might make you a person with dubious taste in music, though. . But, de gustibus non est disputandum. You're a fascist only if you like Lee Greenwood.
It does seem to be true, though, that country music seems to be more popular with Republicans than with Democrats, for reasons having nothing to do with a remarkable tolerance for nasal, out-of-tune singing, and here's a theory about why: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/friendly-interest/201809/why-republicans-listen-country-music-and-democrats-don-t

(10,146 posts)I can't take the Bro-country crap about trucks, beer and taking your girl down to the old swimmin' hole, but stuff like Merle Haggard's "Misery and Gin" stands the test of time.

(271 posts)I used to watch the Grand Ole Opry every chance I got. Luckily even when I was stationed in Turkey and Germany I could listen to Country and Western songs playing on the radio from stations in the Southwest.

I can give it a try and I can always shut it of - always willing to try to learn.
