Pardon me Im rambling too much coffee the boys and my wife and our guests left for community pool I bagged it sciatica kicking my ass. Anyway a Friend of mine is contractor he builds homes. General contractor carpenters plumbing electrical, our two guys in vo tech carpentry and electrical. And other week we did a dad field trip to union electric and carpenters training school. Our one son in law is electrician apprentice and he hooked it up for our one son ,and I picked up phone and called carpenter training school.
I said hey Im 30+ year teamster can you show my boy a little of what its about and he extended the courtesy of being union. So I called my friend general contractor and asked told him what I needed. Its gonna be either university for these two or trades. And in their senior year they gonna be making application for union apprenticeship , If they decide university is not for them.
Now my friend is associated with non union ABC training program. He sends his apprentices to that program. But he went thru carpenter union training years ago then later on he started his own company. And he said yes, So next year they will be old enough to work on job sites with journey trade workers. And get a taste of what they will be doing. Or just starting out as gophers my wife says Im a pusher. I told her hey they wanna work as they working this summer at horse stables. And this will show them what they may be getting into.
I watched our son in law for 3 years getting ripped off working non union , for half ass electrical contractor. And I kept on telling him go IBEW and he finally did. And now he is making more in wages than electricians at his old non union company and hes in his fourth year as apprentice. Maybe I am a pusher , I applied in 87 after discharge from army for carpenters union apprentice program.
But ended up working union docks then getting my 3rd class truck license. And was making great cash and turned down my slot in apprenticeship. Why I was taking care of my family and could not afford the pay cut as first year carpenter apprentice. so I want our guys to be able to have a career that they enjoy. Maybe I am a pusher but its my job as a father to keep a firm hand on them and to try give them direction. If they go trades carpenter or electrician after high school. By the time they get thru 5 year apprenticeship by age 23 they be making great cash union cash. Today carpenter on contract 31$ hour journeyman rate and electrician is I think 38$ hour journeyman rate.

(38,958 posts)With the coming avalanche of AI, automation and consolidations that we are just beginning to see in the economy. I don't believe that Universities will be the best place for many. Lots of repetitive jobs such as Retail, Truck Driving, Warehousing and Distribution will be replaced in the next 5-10 years after that jobs that were previously considered untouchable in professional fields will be next. Trades however will likely do much better as they will still be required to construct and service our world.

(12,157 posts)Even if they are on an academic track. It helps make them more rounded. And a union membership is always a big plus. This is another one of those things the bosses have convinced the gullible. "You will do better is you are part of a group." It amazes me that so many states have "right to work (for less) laws. It use to be just stupid Texas and one other, maybe Oklahoma.

(31,979 posts)I completed a 4 year union apprentice job at a commercial printer's. In that field, my experience was very valuable. And the pay was much better than a lowly art job at some advertising agency. I was glad I did that.

(17,984 posts)I overheard her talking to the people who were painting their house. She was encouraging them to join the program. Make better money than painting. Not sure if it's unionized or not, but I think it's a damn good idea.
I may be a laid back teamster left wing but its my job to give them guidance

(2,778 posts)The Building Trades is what you want to look at. If your sons top out of an apprenticeship program they receive their journeyman book. Having a book allows them to travel to other locals in the US which is called booming. If they are lucky and work for one company they can build up credits fast and retire early, 50-55. The highest pay with the best package are areas in the northeast, north central, westcoast.

(31,979 posts)You both do such a great job with your boys, you and Mrs. TEB. Both good role models and you both keep em busy and out of trouble, which at the age of 15-16 they are prime targets for getting in trouble!
Swimming is one of the best things for young boys -- we always took ours to the Y every Friday after school. My husband taught them how to swim, he is an excellent swimmer. He taught me how to swim when I was 40! Now I swim all the time.
I wish I would have learned to swim sooner, but my mom was terrified of water. If we went on a trip to the beach she scared me out of going in too far. My dad was a good swimmer, but on vacations he spent most of his time at the bar.
