It's the last season. I'm still halfway through, so no spoilers.
The writer, when she started, said that she wanted to tell the story of women in prison, which would have included a large population of minority women. However, she knew it would be easier to hold a white audience if she started with Piper. Now that we're in the final season, we are seeing the story play out with minorities taking front stage.
My impression: the timing is tragically perfect. The immigration issue comes home as a couple of our regulars get caught in that net. We see the destructive force of ICE, breaking up families.
With the other regulars, we see one of them contemplating suicide as a way out. Prisoners who want to stay clean during their stay, can't do it because of crooked guards.
And through this all, you see Piper trying to readjust to the world, and as unfair as the process might be, you just get disgusted with her because she still manages to screw things up for herself. The imbalance of what women have to face in society, just makes it harder to feel compassion for Piper.
The show definitely has an arc and is being true to its mission.

(9,714 posts)(even though I didn't expect to). After two episodes, I got bored and uninterested. Piper is the most clueless character ever. I can't work up any compassion for her either. They should have stopped with the 6th season. But maybe i'll give it another try when winter comes and the outdoors isn't calling.

(7,113 posts)The final OITNB season is the series' best one in a couple of years, I'd say. Indeed, it was very topical with plotlines "ripped from the headlines," as they say.
Beyond shining a light on current social problems, I thought they did an excellent job bringing the series to a conclusion. So many series just end "standing on one leg," so to speak. But OITNB provided a sense of closure, even if everyone's personal story didn't ended well.
S7 is well worth the 13-plus hours it takes to view the entire thing.

(21,839 posts)I was late getting into OITNB because it is labeled a "comedy-drama" and I'm not a big fan of comedy so I never watched it at first. Now I am a big fan. I love some of the other women characters in the show. Piper is definitely not the most interesting.
on another note, I recently started watching Big Little Lies for the same reason... it is labeled a comedy-drama. there is actually not much comedy in it though.
