We found a bit of history in the ceiling

Installing a new closet light in our 1928 house yielded a yellowed newspaper fragment from the now-defunct Pittsburgh Press editorial page dated Saturday, August 31, 1935. One editorial has only the first sentence intact, “It is too early to announce that Huey Long dug his political grave with his mouth.”

The name seemed familiar, so I looked him up. Governor of Louisiana, then senator. Democrat. Populist. Avoided race baiting. Critical of wealthy elites.

He was assassinated September 10, 1935.

He appointed her Secretary of State of LA. I think she was one of the first female Secretaries of State in the country. Huey also dedicated the capitol building in Baton Rouge to her. It was quite the scandal in my family. My great grandmother never forgave T Harry Williams for mentioning the affair in his biography of Huey.
