Couple win a million on National Lottery scratchcard thanks to their hungry cat

Hugging the lucky ginger tom, the delighted couple told how Andrew bought the £1million-winning scratchcard after going to get a tin of Whiskas.

Andrew drove to his local petrol station, but forgot to buy six-year-old Shorty’s regular chicken treat.

Instead he got some petrol and the £5 Monopoly Millionaire scratchcard... Andrew, who had two £100 wins with the same type of scratchcard in previous weeks, drove straight home – with no cat food – to break the news to Paula and their son, Xavier, 12...

“We both ran in and he was just stood there with his legs wide and his arms in the air saying ‘I’ve won a million pounds!’

“I just looked at him and said ‘Are you sure? Let me look. He said, ‘I know how a scratchcard works.’

The by-now seriously hungry Shortcake, who “already lives the life of luxury” according to the couple, was given a tin of ham to tuck into.
