during which men wore hair pomade, which prevented hat-hair, and were mostly clean-shaven.

When I see a long-haired young person with facial hair and wearing a fedora, I'm sorry to say my first thought is hipster/incel.

for women as well as gloves. I miss some of the formal dressing. Everyone looks like slobs now. Sometimes formal dressing does give a person a better sense of the occasion and garners more respect from others.

No one takes pride in their appearance anymore, instead opting for cosmetic/medical procedures to look better, often giving a negative result.

My great aunt remembered all the temporary housing and markets after the earthquake. Her family's home survived.

I remember my great grandmother very well. When this film was made she and my great grandfather were a young married couple. Sometimes I imagine I might see them in this film. It's a fascinating glimpse of the world they lived in.

Cleaning up after all those horses being a big one. Filth in the streets cause many health problems.

Also, walking everywhere for most was unbearable as well, especially in the winter. I noticed few crosswalks in the video, people just walked down 5th Avenue between the trolleys and horse carts.

Progress follows a need.

Bring back the streetcars too.

Faster vehicles could be parked outside the city in giant parking structures, as they have at Disneyland California or Venice Italy.

And many of those people lived and worked on the upper floors of multi-story buildings that had no elevators.

Elevators were a great invention for people who can't climb up and down stairs, but maybe not so great for people who need the exercise.

Cable cars, visible car exhaust, hazy air (pollution and fog), two guys holding hands, litter, 'don't-sit-here' park railing, arriving ferry is departing Rosedale

All in all it is the same as where i live now- horse carts on the streets, sidewalk confusion, litter, ferries and hand-holding.
And we are also all living in the most modern of times.

Always seem to notice the haze in the sky from old black and white film. Maybe it’s just the lack of color but you almost never see distant objects in these films. Without many regs I’d venture air quality and general visibility was quite poor in those days.

the filming of evidently a well-to-do family being driven in their automobile by a uniformed Black Driver. (around 4:00 minute mark). Family of 6, parents and 4 kids. Girl in front on Dad's lap looked particularly annoyed by the whole ordeal.

Bet their ancestors would loved to have a copy of that film.

Also near the end when some aerial filming was done, it was so obvious the city was enveloped in air pollution.

Thanks for posting.

Sensible ladies wore dresses that covered well turned ankles allowing men to concentrate on their work, not form fitting styles that accentuated their curves which could be dangerously distracting. Yes, indeed , sensible on even the hottest days of summer. It's a woman thing.

Enjoyed watching that throwback to 108 years ago.

I wonder if you could appeal to the power-brokers of that era by telling them that their industrializing ways are going to have devastating effects on the Earth's climate over the next century if they'd be willing to foresake their growing carbon footprint? I doubt it. Most of the world isn't willing to do it today and we're staring down daunting circumstances.
