Why do some people insist that you know somebody when you say you don't know them?

Why do some people insist that you know somebody when you say you don’t know them?

For example:

Other person: You know John Johnson?

Me: no.

Other person: Oh don’t you know him he used to come to AA meetings at this church all the time?

Me: I don’t remember him.

Other person: Oh, if you saw him you would know him.

And so on....why do people do this?

Sheesh. You'd think Peter would have asked someone at the meal "Could you point him out to me?"
