I saw my first snake of the season this morning. Unfortunately,

it was in the band shed. About a three and a half foot king snake.
My band mates were a bit wary today. I'm not sure where it is.
We decided to leave it in there as a mascot.

Not sure if that is significant or not, but I remain alert.

I'll add, I'm only referring to the urban trail and wetland area near my house--not the foothills trails where the prairie rattlers are surely in abundance.

and a Mojave or two by now. Also bull snakes.
The real neighborhood bummer out here in the boonies is that
the BLM pond adjacent to my property did not fill this year (so far).
Last year either. When the large pond fills the toads come out of the
deep cracks and croak very loudly for days while they enjoy an orgy
of mating. Poor little toads. So horny....

Often enough it means you don't have a problem with rattledogs, mice, rats, etc. It's still startling when you get surprised though.
