(5,103 posts)When it comes to deer, thinning the herd is a necessity.
Overpopulation leads to chronic wasting disease, think mad deer, or a terrible death by starvation.
I agree that to kill just for target practice is unacceptable.

(3,056 posts)I used to work at the local restaurant, and had the chance to meet and talk to a lot of hunters. While it's still not something I would do myself, I did gain an appreciation for the sport. I guess deer can breed like rabbits, and thinning is necessary and does help strengthen the herd in the long run. I understand that head will go on the wall eventually, but they use the whole animal. For all the hunters I met and spoke to, none of them were "trophy hunters". Ever. Plus "natural" death in nature is seldom pretty.
I also learned that "the hunt" was part of the hunt. So while the men that saved this deer were probably hunters, taking a helpless animal just isn't how it's done.

(11,949 posts)Even in Europe and Eastern Europe many rural people do. As do I.
And when cutting hay I have seen guys make sure they cutter does not hit a fawn hiding in the grass. And when it happens, and it does, no one is happy about it. Ive seen the whole cutter shut down when the driver happens to spot a fawn and carry or run it out of the way. Then later they may well have shot and eaten that deer.
We are in interesting species. Can feel sympathy and take life.
