it is just part of the way their vision works - the strong contrast of light line on dark background, or the opposite - dark line on a light background, is what causes the reaction. a large heavy animal doesn't want to risk stepping into or on something that might cause an injury. might be a hole, or a loose object that could roll or trip. easier to hop over than spend too much time investigating...prey animals on the move, tend to keep moving.
