I used to have a dog (Rat Terrier) that did this. Reminded me of Pepe Le Pew. Midnight Writer Nov 2019 #8

I do recall that this prancing behavior is not an expression of happiness. It's a move that communicates caution and anxiety to other deer. Some biologists may have a different opinion, but this animal is exposed to predators and senses that exposure.

Lots of deer around my neck of the woods, and if me or my dog startles one or more of them, this is usually how they make a hasty exit. Side note: They don't look very large (they aren't), but it's impressive how the ground reverberates when they do this. They're very powerful animals!

amazing things I ever saw was while I was sitting at a stop light in Lincoln City Oregon. I had the red light and noticed that all the cross traffic had stopped. Couldn't figure out what the problem was and looked around to see a mother deer escorting her two babies thru the crosswalk! I smile every time I think about it.
