And Roy and Dale of course . We have been watching DVD's of old westerns we got from my father in law when he passed. We decided to bring them home instead of selling them at the estate sale and I am so glad we did. Lots of Roy Rogers, Glen Ford, John Wayne and some old tv series like Bonanza, Laramie and Big Valley (he loved Barbara Stanwick).

It has been so wonderful to go back to a simpler time in terms of tv and movies, no violence, lots of happy endings. He also had a bunch of James Cagney movies, so we watched "G Men" the other night.

I know, I know Native Americans were not treated well in the old westerns and I get that, I also understand that there were not many people of color in good roles, I just won't boycott them because of that. It takes me back to my childhood and a simpler time I just can't be angry all the damn time.

Roy and Gene beat people up in every movie and TV show. I don't think they ever "killed" anyone, but plenty of other characters on westerns, TV or movie, did. I've seen video of Robert Fuller (Jess Harper in Laramie) lamenting the FCC ordering westerns to tone down violence in the early 1960s, and still Gunsmoke began every episode with Matt Dillion in a shootout.

I love old westerns, but you can't say they weren't violent.

The movies now seem to go out of their way to show as much blood and nasty violence as possible. I've walked out of a couple of them. I told someone once I would be more upset to come home and find my child watching a violent movie than a sex filled one. I can explain sex, I can't explain gratuitous violence.

used to shoot the gun out of the bad guy's hand?

Even as a kid I was always a little suspicious of that.

I was always confused about the Wolf to Bullet switcheroo with his dogs, though. I don't think it was ever explained why Roy started out with Wolf (he may have been a wolf and not a dog) and then all of a sudden, there was Bullet, the beautiful German shepherd.

Maybe Google knows what the deal was on the dogs.

My Internet search took me to a DU thread I started in 2011, wondering what happened to Wolf.
