(17,857 posts)He used to be my daughter's dog, but he is my dog now. The back hips don't work so well now, but he can still play like a puppy. A day is not complete without a walk with him. Doesn't go nearly as far, but he loves what he can do.

(202,970 posts)My Jack is a Brussels Griffon, so he's not all that big, and he's doing fine, but I still worry and know what it's like. I've adopted older dogs and they're just the best. I adopted Jack as a 5 month old puppy and I'd forgotten what it was like - the only other puppy I'd had was the dog I grew up with. Puppies can be tough, no wonder they're so cute!

(36,814 posts)All of my dogs are 2nd hand from somewhere else. The oldest we adopted was about 12 and was the one who made it to 18.

(202,970 posts)I adopted my Barney at age 10 or 11, he'd been a stud dog at a "commercial kennel" and when he got too old they had no more use for him, but fortunately he was rescued by a wonderful woman who worked with him for a few months before he was offered for adoption. He'd never lived with people before and wasn't housebroken, but she did an amazing job. I had him for eight wonderful years, he was such a good dog with the best temperament. I miss him still. Two of my dogs were seniors who had belonged to people who died and Jack was a pet shop rescue. Rescue is the best and I've never been disappointed.

(2,672 posts)Here is a pic of two of my old companions. Sadly these old friends have passed away.
We lost Winnie two years go. We raised her from a puppy. She was a pitbull mix and she was the most loving dog I have ever owned and I miss her every day.
Callie, the cat died of old age this year. I have more cats. but just haven't the heart to get a new dog.

(36,814 posts)All but one made it to 17. The first two were the worst as those were the ones my kids grew up with. I miss them all every day.

(5,807 posts)I still think fondly of our Snooper Dog gone since the mid 1980s. He was loyal until the end even though we did insist on a much hated bath a few times a year whether he needed it or not. 😥

(17,570 posts).. about a month to finally feel 'free' enough to wander about the house without worrying about him struggling to get up to follow me...wherever i went. I would time all my movement to coincide with his long sleep periods. Sure miss my big boy.
