I'm watching the old Andy Griffith show.

Andy and Barney decided that Goober needed a girlfriend. They talked to the Goob about it, and he said he did like a woman who came into the filling station.

Goober went on a date with the woman and he was very aloof... he didn't know what to do. He talked to Barney about it, and Barney and Goob decided to observe Andy while on a date in order to teach the Goob what to do.

Barney and Goob spied on Andy and his date through the window. Andy was sitting close to his date on the sofa. Barney provided commentary to Goober.

"See how he sits nice and close to her? See how he doesn't call attention to his arm as he puts it around her? What a smooooth move. He just kind of floats his arm out there. Just floattttts it out there"

Man, I'm learning a lot here.

But this Mayberry as an all-white town ... well, a good reminder of how pernicious and persistent segregation was on TV. Still is, really.

There's a "Mayberry Cafe" in a town near here, and it plays that show on 5 TVs all the time. "Aunt Bee’s Famous 3 Piece Fried Chicken Dinner"

it's been on everyday from when i was a kid, on the same channel based in the city i grew up ... i really don't understand the fascination with it, other than laughing at white country folks, low IQ bumpkins and 'the good ol' days' .. ever notice anyone of color or ethnicity ?
the station it has aired on forever it seems is in Raleigh NC and the same station where Senator NO, yes good ol' Jesse Helms got his start delivering editorials before he went into politics
the last time i watched andy griffith was in my teens when after school hanging with friends and smoking pot, we'd watch to laugh at Barney...

because Don Knotts was fabulous as Barney, Ron Howard was the best child actor in the history of TV, and Andy Griffith ran the show to perfection. Didn't hurt that Thelma Lou was cute as a button.

I don't think there were any speaking parts. Keep an eye out, you'll see them in crowds in front of the courthouse, etc. I used one scene from the show in an example to my right wing relatives who claim that suddenly Democrats want to stop people from saying Merry Christmas. A Christmas show, very last scene, the camera pulls away to show a banner hung in front of the courthouse that says 'Season's Greetings' or 'Happy Holidays'. It was 1964.
