Rest in peace, Sailors.
My bride of only eight months and I were in Ashland Wisconsin where I was interviewing to become the City of Ashland's first Director of Community Development. The weather in Ashland was windy and raining but not far out of Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior the Edmund Fitzgerald was fighting a horrible winter storm.
I was offered the job and accepted on the spot but hours later I found out that the ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald had radioed "she was taking on water" and shortly thereafter, the Anderson had lost radar contact with the Fitz....
I learned that there were men from Ashland about the Fitz and that Ashland had a proud heritage in Great Lakes shipping as was evidenced by the huge "Soo Line Ore dock" sticking out into the bay.
The people of Ashland took the loss of the ship and crew very deeply.
I served the City as CD Director for a little over four years and then was honored to serve as Mayor for another four years. That night in Ashland has become an important piece of our family lore.
To the crew of the Fitz....
