I'm at the Social Security office for the first time...

Holy crap, it is packed. All I need is a replacement SS card, had no luck trying to do it through the website and mail. They wanted me to send them my driver’s license– not a scan or copy, my actual license.

So, here I sit. The wait is 2+ hours, which isn’t bad according to the online reviews. One guy said “pack breakfast, lunch, and a lawn chair.” I thought he was joking. Nope.

I may need to send for reinforcements bearing snacks and cocktails. We’ll see how it goes.

That's what my mom's SHIP counselor told her as well -- pack a bag, because it's going to be a long wait.

I am contemplating trying to take her to her local office (at almost 92), as we have been unsuccessful since June in contacting them to update her address since she moved from Indiana to Illinois. She can't get anything from Medicare either, since they take their information from SS. It's been a total joke trying to get in touch with them.

I just can't see her sitting there for 2+ hours in order to do an address change.

After my dad died his last 1099 for SS was sent to the nursing home and returned (moved left no forwarding address?) and physically going to the SS office was the only way I could get it. Took all day. Every. single. person. was given a long pitch and instructions on how to set up their SS account online, no matter how long the line was or even if they wanted that information. Beyond frustrating.

Unless you need your replacement card right away, just make an appointment.

I was required to make an appointment when applying for widow's benefits. I happened to arrive a little bit early and they called me for my appointment within about 10 minutes of when it was scheduled.

Our government has been hijacked by mean-spirited people who think they are better than everyone else & that government should serve them, & only them.
