(3,266 posts)to witness a loved one slip away like that. Its taking my mother right now - one brain cell, one memory at a time. I just went to visit her last week, shes in a locked memory care unit. I was very happy to see her up and active and participating in the group activity, she usually just wants to stay in her room and sleep. But then heartbroken that she just waved at me politely like you would to someone you recognize, but cant quite place where you know them from. Like seeing the post office lady in the grocery store...

(54,770 posts)The granddad was in a home, but was doing reasonably well. Apparently, they were very close, something might have happened to grandson's dad.
The granddad was saying to his grandson that the day was rapidly approaching where he wouldn't remember him.
Grandson said, without missing a beat, "I don't care, I will remember you . . . . . . and be here."

Mom never forgot me. Sometimes she'd call me a couple times a day when I lived in Calif, when she was afraid or worried. I miss those conversations, even when they got a little wacky at times.
