My work today took me to the Netherlands. In a taxi on the way back from my office outside Utrecht to Utrechts Centraal train station this afternoon, the driver was using a GPS, as he was from the provincial town where my office is, and didn't know the way by heart.
I pretty much DO know the route by heart by now, but I dont know the names of all the streets. Therefore, I wasnt paying much attention to what the driver's GPS was saying until it instructed the driver (in Dutch, of course) that in 300 meters, he should take the next right onto United Nazis Way. THAT got my attention. Sure enough, when we approached the intersection, it again said, turn right onto United Nazis Way. HUH??
Then I remembered where I was. The Dutch word naties is indeed pronounced the same way we pronounce Nazis. It means Nations. The streets name is Vereinigde Naties Weg, which is Dutch for United Nations Way.
I had had a long day, having had to get up at 5:30 in order to be in Utrecht at 9 this morning. I was starting to nod off in the taxi 11 hours later, especially with three hours left to go before I got home. I promise you I was wide awake for the rest of the ride.

(17,103 posts)My Shanghai friend's conversation in her native language is often peppered with an abusive racist slang term, often repeated several times in sequence. Although I realize it means something else in her language, it's still a rough spot when I hear it in her dialogue. I've become attuned to hearing it when others are speaking, too. I have no idea what it really means.

(54,341 posts)I got home at 19:30 CET, and dinner wasn't until 20 minutes later. My wife, who is German (votes Green, social worker by profession), found it hilarious, so I decided to share the story.
I speak Dutch, so it didn't take me long to figure out what I was hearing. But it had been a long day, and I was losing my concentration after 12 hours. I don't speak Shanghai Chinese, so there is now way I could follow anything in that language.
