His cartoons never showed anything terrible... just implied something terrible was going to happen.

My favorite: guy at home on the phone with his girlfriend. There are saws, knives, and drills all laid out carefully on a table, and an open trunk in the corner. Caption: "Gee, Marsha, I'm really disappointed you can't make it tonight."

Cartoonist Gahan Wilson, who was a frequent contributor to National Lampoon, passed away yesterday at the age of 89. The announcement appeared this morning on the fundraising site set up by his stepson Paul Winters to help pay for his memory care.

Gahan Wilson, whose outlandish, often ghoulish cartoons added a bizarrely humorous touch to Playboy, The New Yorker, National Lampoon and other publications in the era when magazines propelled the cultural conversation, died on Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 89.
