The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHello, my name is catbyte and I'm a DU addict...
I'm in paradise (Napili, Maui) and it's 2:21 p.m. HST. I'm watching humpback whales playing in the channel between Maui and Molokai, and a pod of dolphins and turtles frolicking and cruising just beyond the reef line but I couldn't stay away from checking in to see what's happening on DU. To demonstrate what a hopeless case I am, I'm attaching two pics of the view from my lanai where I'm now writing this.
(I'm not rubbing it in, honestly)
I'll be back in dreary Michigan soon enough, sigh

(51,550 posts)It's a green sea turtle sanctuary. There are tons of turtles there nibbling on the seaweed on the rocks.
Are you staying at the Napili Surf Beach Resort? I was just there in December!
catbyte
(34,360 posts)so much. It's a lot quieter than Kapalua or Kaanapali and I love the Napili Market. The staff is so friendly and their deli is great. I've been coming to Napili Point for almost 20 years and it's heaven. There are a lot of whales in the channel this year, more than I remember in past years. There's a pod of about 20 dolphins that have been cruising the reef right in front of my unit. It's awesome. And I've seen several turtles. I got here late Tuesday night and am here until the 12th. It's never long enough, is it?
Here's a shot of Napili Bay I just took from the sidewalk in front of my condo:

(15,536 posts)I went on vacation one year the fourth week in July to the Paradise area of Michigan and it rained, was windy, grey and cold! So, no, it's no "paradise" compared to Hawaii.

(34,360 posts)but it's hell in the winter. In fact, I've been to Hell, MI, too.

(15,536 posts)Oh, yes you are.
If you're back in Michigan on Sunday it's going to be 59o and sunny! But no, it'll never be Hawaii. I've been there and it was everything I thought it would be and then some.
Bring back some of that beauty. This is not the most beautiful place in the country in March.

(34,360 posts)time for a cold snap or late winter ice storm. I'm sure there'll some unpleasant weather to greet me.

(9,895 posts)We stayed near Napili...just south actually - at the Aston at Papakea Resort - 3543 Lower Honoapiilani Road, Lahaina, HI (same exact view of Molokai, the address is Lahaina, but it is not in the town of Lahaina proper...
It is a magical island and the views from the South-east coast are stunning (they are stunning everywhere on the island to be fair!)...
Enjoy your stay and soak it all in.

(34,360 posts)Right now, the sun is shining with blue sky overhead but there's spray coming from someplace, I can't pinpoint it. It could be coming from the West Maui mountains or coming across the channel from Molokai which has been socked in pretty much all day. There has to be a rainbow somewhere close...

(1,605 posts)My wife is in San Juan, PR for a conference. The pics are nice but, sadly, I have lost the capacity to be drawn into the enjoyment of anything--anything. I'm mired in dread. I've relayed this to medical professionals, but to no avail.
Until this country once again exemplifies the good that it is--tho not perfect--and resumes its long struggle to realize its highest principles, I cannot find even an inward mile in the beauty of external things.
Like many, I've been hurting, mostly in silence, for a long time. I suspect others feel and understand the angst of knowing that something awful occupies the space in my head that should be reserved for joyful things.
Sorry...but I take solace in the hope that the beauty that surrounds and awaits me will manifest when the clouds of our current despair pass.

You keep our spirits lifted every single hour of the day. It's about time you get to have your own spirits lifted with some R&R.
I sincerely hope you are dictating your posts into your phone with one hand, and that you have some sort of delicious tropical drink in the other hand. 🍹
I am really jealous, not going to lie to you.
Do me a favor and squish your toes around in the sand for me. I just love that feeling at the beach.
Have lots and lots of fun!
