Classes will be held: Instructions for online classes at Berkeley.
Hi all, as you probably anticipated, I will move my discussion sessions and office hours online starting tomorrow. Im sure your biggest concern right now is how we can continue to have class. Dont worry, I am prepared.
The default method will be to use ZoomYoull have to download the client at
http://zoom.us. I will post the data youll need to join the meeting on bcourses.
In case for some reason (e.g. because the service is overloaded), we will use Google Meet. If that happens, I will tell you beforehand. If you dont use a @berkeley.edu email address I will have to invite you individually so keep that in mind.
If Google Meet doesnt work anymore I will use a site called
http://explaineverything.com which is maintained by the AWS. You will be able to see a whiteboard and talk to me directly in your web browser but there will be no video.
In case that also ceases to work, well have audio-only sections on my mumble server. I will send the details when it comes to that.
In case of bigger infrastructure disruptions (like a large scale power outage); were going to have sections by amateur radio: I will use the Mount Diablo repeater station at 147.060 MHz with a PL tone of 100 Hz. My call sign is KN6CDY.
In case the Bay Area becomes uninhabitable, I will move to the wilderness. I plan to be reachable by APRS, but well probably have to move sections to shortwave. In that case well have to use CW transmission so practice your Morse Code.
Note that a nuclear attack in the upper atmosphere can cause very strong electromagnetic fields, so if you want to prepare for that use either vacuum tube based radios or place them in a Faraday cage.
I hope that this assures you that no matter what happens this semester, I will not let it prevent you from learning Quantum Mechanics.
Best wishes,
Christian.
My son the engineering student, whose classes have been moved on line (No word yet on how they're going to deal with labs) for the remainder of the semester received this in an email from some of his friends.
It cracked me up.
