EverClear is 95% and you can get it at the liquor stores. Make hand sanitizer.

(5,931 posts)It's strong enough you can dilute it w/ gel and still be above 60%

(4,919 posts)Ethyl alcohol is is the active ingredient in hand sanitizers. Grain alcohol or "Everclear" is almost pure ethyl alcoho, NOT methylated (or "denatured" alcohol THE SAME ingredient in hand sanitizers. Mixing 70% grain alcohol with aloe vera gel or something is the EXACT same chemical combination in hand sanitizers. This is a matter of science, chemistry.
Your articles discuss Vodka and denatured (methylated) alcohol... NOT what the OP was talking about at all.

(4,919 posts)Ethyl alcohol (EtOH) is a simple molecule. It's the same thing whether it's packaged in a hand sanitizer bottle or in a bottle of Everclear.

(4,919 posts)Interestingly, liquor stores in my area are totally sold out of it. I'm not a consumer of it, but was asking them because I've seen how folks are desperate to find ethyl alcohol based hand sanitizers and isopropyl alcohol in out-of-stock stores.

(22,474 posts)I actually make a mistake and bought a case of rubbing alcohol but it is 50% not 60%. I figure I'd just put on extra though........I don't see the need for the aloe if you don't have it.

The ONLY objection listed to using Everclear is that people will have to use math to properly dilute it! Oh no!! MATH!!
Goddamn, people.
Everclear is NOT vodka!!
Everclear is NOT denatured alcohol!!

(16,927 posts)I heard and saw recipes using other brands of vodka, but also heard that any hand sanitizer you make you should use 70% alcohol. And a d.j. quipped that it would probably be better to drink it than put it on your hands

(7,288 posts)that it might cause a run on Everclear.
Other than the cost, it's a perfectly viable option.

(4,919 posts)So, the run on liquor stores has already happened.
I found myself very recently taking a job in a retail chain known for office, supplies, printing, etc. recently to make ends meet... What exquisite timing on my part... The store was mobbed as soon as the inventory shipment arrived this week... Sanitizers, disinfectant wipes were sold out within 15 minutes. All we are printing the last few days is coronavirus related stuff... Signs for restaurants, letters to patients from doctors/dentists, and at home lesson plans for closed schools. Nothing else. Interestingly, there has been a RUN on computer monitors for folks now required to work at home. These are plot points I've never seen in the all the virus or zombie apocalypse movies I've seen.

(8,171 posts)seal on it so about 1/2 has evaporated.
Not sure what else I would use it for so hand sanitizer sounds good.

A friend in Michigan who is a liquor distributor says their sales of Everclear have gone thru the roof!!
