Recently came upon a link which led back to here, and it followed it for old time's sake. It was a pleasure to see the place up and running, and even recognize some names.
Last week I got out of hospital, and started looking in a bit more regularly. I'm all right, the nurses wave me out with a 'see you later'. 4 A.M. Monday before last was a damned odd time to start up watching news again, but I needed something with a measured half hour's distraction while holding a hot compress on a swelling where an IV port had gone a bit wrong after a few days. Quietism has been good for my equinamity.
Had the devil's own time getting the new password system to let me log in. My old password didn't work, and the first several new ones sent did not either. Gave it another try just now, and one finally paid off.
So hello to old friends, ladies and gentlemen, and I will be looking in now and then, and possibly commenting on occasion.

(62,444 posts)What makes it a damn fool thing not to uncritically believe that people on the internet are who they claim to be.
Are you suggesting that all of those various Nigerian princes have been trying to send me money?
And why would you hold a grudge because some total stranger doesnt take a pseudonym at his word?
I thought you said you dont care what others think about you. Change your mind?
Very unlike the reasonable person I recall.

(95,247 posts)Someone sent you a note, and you took their bait like a bass at at a spoon. Without the slightest basis except perhaps some recollections six years old at least. The odds that whoever sent it to you knew anything at all about me and mine are beneath measure by the most minutely sensitive instruments.
If you make further reply you will not get one in return.

The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)And I appreciate it very much.
What started out as a short break stretched into a long spell. Things were overwhelmed by SWMBO's health problems, which have come out alright, but took some convalescence and home nursing. Then I began having bouts of pneumonia, which turned out to be a consequence of the leukemia setting up shop for serious trade after long quiescence. One of the symptoms is intense night sweats, which we initially took for breaking of a fever, because they leave me feeling quite chilled, after soaking clear through the bedding. Fevers don't break several nights running, however. I found quite a group of doctors around me at the emergency room, my blood being mostly white cells. This was mitigated for a while, but after a bowel blockage, the doctor put me on a new drug that is a sort of 'chemo at home' pill. I was lucky to draw him at the hospital, and to be able to have this on a charity supply (neither Medicaid nor Medicare cover it) and the usual charge runs about a hundred thousand dollars a year. Apparently the illness fills the body with these lymphocytes, in organs and nodes and just about everywhere. The drug drains off the abundance, and then keeps removing the extra before they can accumulate. It is a maintenance, not a cure. It has kept me out of hospital for a couple of years, till recently.
Psychological, it has had an interesting effect. An initial elation and fresh energy, as it got rid of the excess, was marked and enjoyable. You might think the improvement would be cheering, but it made me realize just how debilitated I had been, and how ill I really was. I had had the diagnosis for many years (it was discovered in blood work after my first heart attack), but it had not seemed to be causing me any trouble. Apparently it really had been. It may seem a perverse reaction, but it was mine. In any case after heart surgery, after which the sternum never knitted, and repeated pneumonia, I am in less than optimal shape, and am prone to shortness of breath on even the best of days. Prolonged exertion, and casual employment of my physical strength, things I have always reveled in, are pretty much out of the question. Normally I am far from bedridden, certainly, but there are certainly limits, and if I forget or ignore them, I get a sharp reminder just where they are.
When the pneumonia finally broke through recently, and I had to go to hospital, they discovered some further cardiac difficulty, which may be something this drug contributes to. I am off it for a while to see, though I am led to expect this is temporary, and the difficulty will prove unrelated. It could take me unexpectedly but quickly, at least. I am used to that prospect already, and it does not particularly worry me. I came out of the hospital to the first stirring of this pandemic. During my adventurous youth, I was for periods in a sort of chronic danger of dire physical consequences I could only trust to luck to avoid. This feels similar. One does all one can to reinforce one's luck, of course, and while fortune may favor the bold it certainly favors the careful and prepared. Into the bargain, it is more pleasant to be calm.
I have had a good time here today, though admittedly it has taken on some aspects of a reformed drunk set off to a binge by a nibble of fruitcake soused in rum. It is probably not good for me to sit and type pretty much fourteen hours straight without a nap, and I have neglected my hydration, though I have kept up the new cardiac medicine alright. I expect I should dial it back a bit, but has been grand fun. The most cheering thing about it (apart from a few bits of old-style razor work) has been seeing that I've cheered people up a bit by returning. That feels good. and I am glad I have been able to a smile to many faces.

(26,403 posts)There has been a lot of change the past 6 years. I have had some gaps during this time as well. Thankfully my own personal circumstances have not been as personally significant as yours. I've said goodbye to too many cats than I care to over this time. My kids have had some issues, my own work has been less than stellar, school similarly so - but I carry on and visit when it make sense. DU is just a social place for me to visit, learn and ask questions these days.
The person I was six years ago is not the person I am today. Perhaps it is because I'm now over 50, or is it because my kids need more from me, who knows. Does it matter - not really? I constantly examine my priorities to make sure what matters to me is being taken care of first. I think you did this reflexively with SWMBO and I am glad you did so. There is nothing to explain here. I would hope people remember to take care of themselves and take are of their own first.
I am ecstatic you are back - your voice adds a lot here and has always been sharp and informative. I have missed you. Am very glad you've seen a bit of your legacy and how much you've been missed. Even so, I worry that you do keep to what's important first. But even so, you find your way back here more often than not.
Hugs

(95,247 posts)I was not too surprised the old one did not work, but subsequent new ones sent to me did not work either. I am not going to bother hunting them up again for examination, but the one I finally made work may illustrate the problem. It contained two characters which could be read either as upper-case 'I', lower-case 'l', or numeral '1' in the sans-serif style font my account presents. Being rather bloody-minded at times I resolved to try all nine possible permutations, and third time proved lucky when numeral 1 was entered twice.

Update: I have now read through the prior responses to your post and very much wish I had found a more original way to say what everyone else has said which is that we thought of you, we asked about you, we wondered about you, we worried about you. I thought someone just offended you enough to log out and stay there.
