I was here at the computer and started hearing a bunch of car horns just honking and honking down the road a bit.
I stepped outside and there began an absolutely amazing parade of cars, at least 50 or 60, slowly parading by with handwritten and decorated posters on them saying stuff like: Read, Watch Netflix, Order In, Enjoy Your Family, Love Your Pets, We'll Get Through This, Embrace Hope, Love One Another, and on and on and on. Balloons and streamers flying in the wind, beautiful people of all ages, children, teens, parents, grandparents, all smiling and waving and hollering out their car windows to the people who had ventured out to watch. They even had motorcycle police escorts...
What a wonderful thing to do! I've still got tears running down my face, but for the first time in a long time, they're tears of joy and hope instead of sorrow and pain. I just wish I hadn't been so stunned that I didn't even think to run in for my camera!

(612 posts)This was in Raleigh, NC.
Edited to add: I'm also lucky enough to be right across from the street they turned on to, so it was a slow and prolonged parade!

There is also a post in GD describing other instances of the same thing happening.
Apparently this is an organized thing, as it seems to have happened in several other cities and states as well, some at the same time of day. I had no idea!
West Lake teachers parade through students' neighborhoods
Sorry for the news link, not my favorite, but all I could find locally so far. I hope it works. This is not about the one I saw today, though. Maybe I'll be able to find something better later...
What a terrific thing for the teachers to do!
Edit to add local newspaper link: NC teachers let their students know they miss them amid COVID-19 school closures
So I haven't found any coverage of the parade in front of my house, but there's info about some other local communities. I still just love what these teachers have done!

(11,562 posts)Here (Victoria BC) people go outside nightly at 7pm and make noise. They play instruments, bang on pots and pans, shake marbles in cookie tins...whatever. The noise is meant as a tribute to the front-line health care workers.

(23,204 posts)Local school had a foreign exchange student from Italy; she had to go back to Italy b/c of the virus. She couldn't have a real going-home party with her friends due to social-distancing stuff. So her friends arranged an impromptu parade past her host family's house--nearly a hundred cars with "goodbye" signs, balloons, horns honking, music; the works! Friends driving by stopped and left gifts on the lawn that she could get later. It was all a pretty cool deal!

Gosh, going back to Italy - I hope she and her loved ones come through OK.
