We eke by as it is. Can't imagine how we'll be able to replace it.

(102,138 posts)As a health care worker, she HAD to have a washer and none of the appliance stores are able to open.
She got it, but is not very pleased with what she bought, but damned glad she has it, nonetheless.
Good luck. I have an aging one myself and cross my fingers every time I use it.

(14,642 posts)Sometimes it a relatively minor part. Or a combination of parts. Older units aren't complicated.
But depending on where you are, there are frequently free washers being offered in places like craigslist if you will just take them away. Usually they work, and are just being replaced because.
Now though, people may not be upgrading, but it's worth a try. Someone may have one they will let go cheaply. People move (or get evicted) and it isn't a very portable item.
Good luck.....

(9,975 posts)You may find an older one, fully functioning, for under $100. Sometimes, they are free if you remove them?

(4,429 posts)How old is it?
I fixed a front loader that a I had - it died (the motor controller) after using it for only 2 or 3 years. It was the easiest thing in the world to fix (okay the part cost 120). But I installed it myself (it just slid in - so easy!)
ETA: the repair person said - over the phone - to throw it out and get a new one.
He said, if I come over and diagnose it, it's a house call. The part will cost $. And then you'll have to pay me to install it.
I said fine, went on a forum with washing machine mechanics - diagnosed it with their help, ordered the part and repaired it myself.

(14,941 posts)Community groups on Facebook can be very helpful. Someone on ours posted last week that their stove died and several people offered her one. She was able to replace it for free.

(24,393 posts)I have a handyman who does fixes on my 15-year-old Kenmore washer and dryer for around $20. The parts arent that expensive. The latest fix involved my buying three bolts to secure the weight to the top of the drum. Bolts cost $1. That and Loctite on the bolts ($10 a tube). Paid him $20 for his time.

(31,374 posts)until April 15th. Some stores will have returns discounted for nicks or dents that have no effect on their function. Might be worth putting on a mask and go look if you have Lowe's near you.
