Which I appreciate.
I went out on a supply run yesterday - It was my first time driving in over 10 days.
On my way home, I passed the Wine and More mega store -AND IT WAS CALLINNG MY NAME.
Anyhow, I masked up, got a wiped down cart from the young lady out front and got to shopping.
A couple bottles of my wife's favorite red wine. Check
4 bottles of a Belgian Red Ale(Countesse du Bourgogne) for my son. Check
Now, let's amble over to the whiskey aisles (There are 5 complete super market size aisles for whiskey)and in the Rye section I saw something I hadn't seen in decades.
My Grand Fathers favorite whiskey.
ETA- My grandfather drank Old Forrester Whiskey, but not this one. This is a brand new whiskey with a brand new Mash Bill.
When I was 11 or so, I became the designated drink mixer for the family card nights so I knew what went into Daddy Joe's Old Fashioned.
Old Forrester Pure Rye Whiskey, 100 Proof.
No lie, my first thought was "Didn't they go out of business?"
Because I never saw a bottle in the bars, homes or liquor stores I've frequented as an adult.
Of course I bought a fifth, it was cheap too - $19 - so if it was nasty I could marinate some steaks or something without feeling guilty.
Now Rye is staging a bit of a comeback and there are some really good NEW brands but the OG ryes like Old Forrester and Old Overholt seem to've been forgotten.
By the way, my area of PA threw a Revolt over taxing Rye Whiskey back in the day.
So it's no surprise that 2 of the best Ryes on the Market today are from Coal Country Pennsylvania.
That would be Liberty Pole Rye and all the Dad's Hat brand ryes but especially the Barrel Strength.
So, what's the verdict?
It was incredible - Spicy well oaked but sweet. It has an almost nutmeg first flavor but there is almost no clue of this on the nose which is a shiny ethanol, peppercorn and wood presentation.
For less than 20 bucks it is (IMHO obviously, taste is subjective) better than Sazerac or Bulleit at twice the price
So for those keeping score at home my cheap ass recommends Old Forrester 100 Proof Rye and it joins Evan Williams Bottled in Bond as under $20 whiskey worth easily twice that amount

I've got a feeling the alcoholism rate is going to go up from all this...
Lot of people sitting at home medicating themselves

(18,402 posts)Order and pay online, drive up (no problem to find street parking these days!) and they put it in your trunk. Oops, they made a mistake in our order, as noticed when got home. A delivery person brought it to our building, curbside, the next morning.
Were fixed for wine., which is about all we drink. Though occasional trouble getting to sleep has arisen, which is depleting our minor stock of cognac and scotch (it does work as a sleep inducer.)

(12,132 posts)introduced me to old fashions with Michter's Rye and I gotta say it was delicious. I have no idea where Michter's lands in the price/quality/value calculation but when the guy with the expense account is feeding them to ya it's pretty darn good.
The Polack MSgt
(13,182 posts)With Michter's American Whiskey being my favorite of the Rye/Bourbon/American trio I've had.
It's not a high dollar brand running from the low to high $40s around here.
So, if that taste profile suits you go for it.
I think it's less sweet than the Old Forrester (Which over ice was almost startlingly sweet) and it isn't as spicy as say Knob Creek Rye (Which I adore as well) so it sits in a nice middle pocket - And if that's your Goldilocks Zone I won't say anything bad about it.
I wish Liberty Pole had national distribution. My cousin lives 7 miles from the Distillery in Washington County and I can get a bottle for less than $50 bucks there. But it's double that price delivered (if you can find a bottle)
Same for Dad's Hat. Add $20-40 to its Pennsylvania price and forget about finding some of the specialty bottles.

(39,171 posts)very good stuff for about $35-45 a bottle. I highly recommend their Sour Mash whiskey.

(13,182 posts)Because we can buy Liquor Wine and Beer in grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores
Compare that to the situation back in PA where everything is controlled - Liquor and Wine but no beer in the State Stores. Beer in Beer distributers but not in regular stores.
I can see those booze stores being added to the essential list at least on a part time basis - But here in Illinois I'm not sure why a liquor mega mart is cleared to stay open.

(34,042 posts)i've really cut down on my drinking since quarantine
for at least the first two weeks i just didn't feel like it/want to
then a couple nights i had one and then two drinks
then nothing again
it's kinda weird. then yesterday (or this morning -- who the fuck can remember anymore) i heard on the tv someone saying drinking alcohol lowers your resistance. i hadn't even thought of that.
maybe i feel like i have to stay on hyperdrive or some crazy thing--to keep mentally alert. but why? nothing's changing that fast--especially at night.
if this was any other time across the last number of years i would have been making my way out to a liquor store to replenish my supply of vodka more than once.
still, it is kinda funny to know that i continue to remain a bit of a mystery...if only to myself
The Polack MSgt
(13,182 posts)And I prefer to drink at my local VFW with all the other old fucks who constitute my friends over drinking at home
So I am drinking less than pre-quarantine me.
But I still have a couple with my wife and son most evenings.
Randomly finding a cheap tasty whiskey, one that has a nostalgic meaning to me...
Well I just figured it was worth banging out an OP

(15,265 posts)Pennsylvania. Residents lucky enough to live on the NJ or Ohio border are bolting over there to buy liquor - apparently annoying the locals.
We have a state store system that Gov Wolf closed when he shut things down. Beer distributors, however, were deemed "life sustaining businesses" and allowed stay open. Now state store online sales have been so huge that about 25-30% of state stores are reopening to fill orders. Why they aren't all open for curbside pick up only is beyond me. State store liquor sales bring in a ton of money, which is something the states needs desperately, for PA.
The Polack MSgt
(13,182 posts)I left almost 40 years ago, I'm shocked that antiquated corrupt State Store/Beer Distributer system is still in place.
I lived in Washington County - 14 miles from Wheeling WV.
Not a lot of people heading east back into Washington (Closest State Store) to buy anything
DeminPennswoods
(15,265 posts)The Rs want to get rid of it, but the question is always how to replace the lost revenue. Washington county abuts where I am directly to the north.
A few years ago, Sheetz broke the ice on beer and wine sales outside the state store/beer distributor system winning a case that because they served food and had an eating area, they were a "restaurant" and could therefore sell alchohol. Now there's beer and wine in some grocery and convenience stores that have some kind of a dining area.

Not to be nebby or anything but are you in metro Pittsburgh or rural Allegheny county?
Either way it's cooler than Washington. Which was selected as the most redneck part of PA a couple years back.
As you know that's a title with a lot of contenders.
ETA, on re-reading, I guess you mean Washington was due north of you. Not the other way around.
DeminPennswoods
(15,265 posts)but I'm not a beer drinker. But I do know what "nebby" means! When employment took me to eastern PA, the first time I referred to gum bands, my co-workers looked at me as if I were speaking Greek.
I'm in Beaver county. Washington is not even close to the most redneck county in PA. Even around here, Westmoreland would be my 1st choice.

(23,951 posts)...nubby mean? And what are gum bands?
The Polack MSgt
(13,182 posts)Nebby (not nubby, nubby is something very different) means impolitely curious - Nosy.
Comes from Pennsylvania Dutch folk's use of "Nebbisch"

However, small neighborhood shops with groceries and the big supermarkets have selections of wine, beer, and spirits. And now, at least down here in Provence, some wineries are offering home delivery. They're already set up to do deliveries to restaurants, so it's been easy for them to switch over. And if you order over 50 worth, delivery is free.
The big supermarkets are doing 'Drive' which is the occasional term for 'Click and Collect'. You don't even have to get out of your car.

(25,151 posts)Yes and you can have your alcohol and mixed drinks delivered!
Distilleries are making and selling hand sanitizer. We have 2 in town and the distilleries are also selling some pop up essentials.
Yesterday they finally had hand sanitizer for sale at a liquor store. There was a huge line to get in.
