... in line at a bank, I complimented the perfume that an OLD woman was wearing in front of me. She replied, “I’m married!” and then turned her back to me again.

I just stood there quietly while thinking, “I wasn’t hitting on you, Granny!”

Oh, well. There’s all types of people out there, and I obviously survived what seemed like an insult to me at the time. Lol.

regarded by most other ages, as 'invisible' - Amy Schumer has cleverly addressed this kind of treatment.

Anyway, I almost bumped [her fault] into a pass for 80 woman on my way out of the cardio gym, apologized with a pleasant smile, and she really acted as if I was hitting on her - before she indignantly toddled on.

I did not react at all until I noticed a gym friend who saw all this. I deadpan said to my friend, 'I guess I just got shot down'.
His reaction was,

In regard to the “invisible” perception, I indeed assumed that my compliment about her perfume, which was genuine, would be especially appreciated from a woman her age.

It’s really hard to predict people sometimes.
