(4,605 posts)Dead songs (cover, first on a Jerry solo album iirc, and traditional) but the band versions are among my very favorites.
Its impossible to pick one. Or three.

Birdsong
Eyes of the World

red dog 1
(27,792 posts)Incredible!
(Back in 1968, you could be a Deadhead & go to all their shows without ever leaving San Francisco)
Their version of "Not Fade Away" was, and still is, better than any other band's version, imo.
(I used to love to hear them do "Midnight Hour" at their shows in the early days)

(21,646 posts)Great music vibe too
Garcia / Lesh / Weir
But I love the lyric reference story and tone line like Houston, too close to New Orleans then later song goes back to busted down on Bourbon st. Set up like a bowling pin
To me the lyrics make it my favorite GD song 2nd would be Casey Jones
But Im not a deadhead so maybe if I heard more Id have another favorite that is an instrumental or something
But for right now .....
Truckin', like the do-dah man
Once told me, "You've got to play your hand"
Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime
If you don't lay 'em down
Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me
Other times, I can barely see
Lately, it occurs to me
What a long, strange trip it's been
red dog 1
(27,792 posts)And Robert Hunter's lyrics on Truckin' are his best, imo.
(I was wondering how long it would take for someone to pick Truckin')

(15,805 posts)I was only able to see two concerts before Jerry died. One was in Vegas. Epic trip.

(27,792 posts)I never knew that.
(Sugaree is a great song)
We rented a white Cadillac (its what the rental car company had) and just cruised into the parking lot, watching the police stop a bunch of VW vans. We had to fly in, so renting a car was the only option. Nevada was definitely not a marijuana-friendly state, and the police were out in force.
Before the show started, we got dumped on. Tons of rain in a short time, so that those of us on the floor were standing in water. As the storm passed over us, we could feel the electricity in the air. They encouraged us to go into the (metal) stands for safety
Some people got hit by lightening in the parking lot- like 8 people.
Pretty sure they started the set with here comes sunshine.
